My Top Five Favorite Female Dancers

FAVORITE FEMALE DANCERS

5 - Ann Reinking. An old school triple threat: dancer/ singer/ actress. Her extra ordinarily long limbs that she contorted in such extremes gave her a unique look, and her raspy voice gave her a unique sound. She exerted more energy and possessed more charisma than those around her that she couldn’t help but stand out, and the audience couldn't help but adore her.

4 - Gelsey Kirkland. She may not have had the highest extension or the nicest feet, but that didn’t matter because every step meant something, every movement was exact. She was exciting to watch as she threw herself into the choreography with quick and precise footwork, while her arms floated effortlessly. She was simply breathtaking.

3 - Cyd Charisse. The lines of a ballerina, the smooth qualities of a jazz dancer, and the passion of an artist, Cyd Charisse was always classy and elegant while being seductive. Her duets with Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain and Fred Astaire in Band Wagon are the stuff of magic. The Frankie and Johnny number in Meet me in Las Vegas and her solo as Vicki Gaye in Party Girl are my personal favorites.

2 - Ann-Margret. Though more of an over all performer than dancer, her charisma was over the top and her energy was an explosion, she grabbed your attention and didn't let go until she was done. She was a true star, the kind they don't make anymore. Her dance numbers in Bye Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas are my favorites.

1 - Natalia Makarova. The expressiveness of her arms and back were the epitome of beauty. She literally takes my breathe away when I watch her dance. The contrasts of her Odette and Odile in Swan Lake was evident in the details of her characterizations: sad/confident, soft/severe, loving/seductive, every movement and moment was sublime. She was and will always be the Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Her Giselle and Aurora were also exquisite.
